A fishball noodles stall always with queue

There is never ending queue at this Fishball Noodles stall at Toa Payoh Lor 5 Food Centre. I am serious that there is always a queue and not sure why too. By the way, this hawker centre has so many good food that is worthy to talk about that I will cover in future. I ordered dry Kuay Teow Fish Ball for lunch. I must say they are generous in giving the fishballs away (3 meat balls and 4 fish balls). What makes this stall's Fishball Noodles yummy is their chilli, fishballs and meat balls that are hand made. Unfortunately this isn't my no 1 fishball noodles stall. I will introduce my heart's number 1 in future. But I still recommend you to try as their fishball noodles are yummy still that I ate everything and left nothing behind.

Famous Kallang Oasis shifted to Toa Payoh

Again it's another tiring day that I knocked out after I reached home on a Friday night. I woke up late enough and decided to go somewhere near for dinner. Oasis is located at Toa Payoh Park which is opposite HDB hub. This Oasis is the famous Kallang Oasis that have shifted to Toa Payoh. It is opened at night until 4am, especially meant for supper lovers. Oasis is famous for their Taiwanese porridge cuisine. I am a porridge lover, especially Teo Chew style.  When you just woke up, a bowl of porridge helps to warm the body and quench thirst. This dinner shall be a vegetarian one because I felt I have eaten too much meat for past few days. I ordered bean sprouts and craypot beancurd.

Their porridge comes in a big flask pot with customised cover that has a hole for the scoop. Their food is good. The stir fried beansprouts with salted fish was yummy. I was surprised by the quality of the craypot beancurd. They use real beancurd unless most Zi Char stall that use egg beancurd. Beancurd was soft and the soya sauce that accompanied it was savoury. I thought the zi char stall that I often ate was good but their food is even better. Needless to say, all dishes are wiped clean. Only negative point is their food isn't cheap. A dinner with 2 dishes already cost $31.

A tired work day

Thursday was a long work day that I knocked off at 8pm. I was stoned when I reached this Taiwanese cafe at Toa Payoh. I wanted to introduce to the readers their speciality curry chicken cutlet. Unfortunately, the curry sauce runs out. So I order the other version which is the stir fried chicken and sauce to be replaced with soya sauce that also runs out. I ended eating plain rice which is surprisingly not bad. By the way I took the picture of the cafe you can visit this cafe. I have also written a post on this cafe titled "Taiwan in Singapore".

Famous Toa Payoh Hainan Beef Noodles

I am not sure when this beef noodles become so popular that there is actually a long queue. Normally, there isnt since I started eating this years ago. It has gotten famous over the years but without doubt, the stall deserves it. Lunch today was an impromptu. I meet up with my permanent head damage friend for lunch at Toa Payoh Lor 7. I suggested trying the beef noodles that was good. We waited for at least 20 minutes to order just 2 bowls of beef balls noodles ($3 each).

The wait was worth it. The gravy makes the noodles so delicious that we both finished our bowl of noodles. We saw the bottles of gravy stored at the stall's shelves. At first we thought the smallest size ($3) means a small amount of noodles. But I counted 9 meat balls and the portion of noodles served is definitely enough to fill a guy's tummy. Money well-worth!

I could see the blissful face of my PHD friend and knew it was a good choice to recommend this to him especially he is going back to US soon to continue head damage learning and would miss Singapore's local food.

Pomfet Fish Hor Fun

After a day's of training, I went home and slept like a dead meat from 6.30 to 9pm! When I woke up blurry, the only thought is to find in the nearest possible location. I headed to the favourite Zi Char stall and ordered the favourite sliced fish Hor Fun ($4). This is the same stall that I blog about Hokkien Mee.

Today seems to be a Hor Fun Day. This is my second favourite dish from this stall. I have eaten many Zi Char's Hor Fun but I always find this stall's Hor Fun the best. The stall likes to use pomfet fish in their dishes. Pomfet fish tastes better with smoother and tender meat. What I like is their smooth and nice texture Hor Fun that I find many Zi Char stall normally overcooked or undercooked this type of thick Hor Fun Their gravy is also not too thick or watery which doesn't make you feel sick of eating it after a while.

Best Ipoh Hor Fun

I accidentally found out that Hong Lim Food Centre is under renovation and discover their temporary location. Without hesitation, I went directly to the temporary food centre and start hunting the famous food stalls that I know. I went for the famous Ipoh Ho Fun with Cray Fish and Prawns ($5). I am glad that the queue is short but it still takes around 10 minutes to wait. Good thing is I was alone for lunch so it is easy to find a seat. When I munched the first bite of the Hor Fun, my bliss level went up as it was very yummy. The crayfish meat was so easy to take out from the shell and meat was soft and tender. Prawns tasted fresh and cooked just to the right texture. Hor fun was well-cooked that was smooth and soft. The gravy blended all the ingredients well together. Chilli sauce was the sour spicy type that increased appetite. By now, you should know that this has become my favourite hor fun. I finished everything in 5-10 minutes. Hence I strongly enouraged you to give it a try

A Japanese cuisine gem at Wisma Atria Food Republic.

I was first introduced to this Japanese food stall (Hamoru) at Wisma Atria Food Republic by a close friend. He treated me a dinner and I love the food since then. I never thought well of Japanese food at Food Court but this stall has a restaurant standard. You should try their speciality call Shiok Maki ($15). At closer look, it is made of fish roe, cheese, Mayo, salmon, unagi. This is a lethal combination. The maki is soft and the taste is fantastic. Many people who knows this stall well will definitely order Shiok Maki. Their bento sets are also good. I tried the Bento E which includes cha soba, tempura, makis and sushi and cost $16+. At first glance, I thought the maki looks like Shiok Maki but it isn't. It also doesn't taste like Shiok Maki but it tastes good too. Shiok Maki combination really makes it tastes good. Their Cha Soba has an raw quail egg and reminded of how Japanese eat it this way too. Therefore, I strongly recommend you to try their stuff and let me know if you agree with me that their food is quite good.

Old Duxton Coffee that doesn't feel old enough

On the plane back to Singapore, I read an article on 女友 magazine introducing food places in Maxwell Chamber Building. Maxwell Chamber Building is near my workplace. I suggested to my colleagues to check out the coffee place that I saw on the magazine after lunch at Maxwell Market. Old Duxton Coffee looks nice from the outside. I ordered Teh-Bing (Ice Milk Tea) and a Oreo chiffon cake for everyone to share. To my disappointment, the Teh-Bing tastes bland. The Chiffon cake is hard and has no much Oreo taste. It has nice cafe name but like the old saying "All that glitters is not gold"

Delicious Hainanese curry rice

Normally I don't eat rice. But I had craving for rice and vegetables after I came back from Sydney. Strangely Maxwell market isn't crowded on Monday. I suspect many people took a long weekend holidays.

This Hainanese curry rice is popular and I often see a queue. I ordered rice with brinjals, pork chop and cabbages ($3.40). And stall owner will pour scoopful of curry gravy over it. Pork chop is a must for Hainanese food. The curry is not spicy and taste rich curry flavour. The gravy makes the rice and vegetables easy to gobble and delicious. Rarely, I ate everything spotless but I did for this. So I strongly recommend those works nearby to give this a try.

SQ Flight Meal From Sydney to Singapore

I was still quite full from Macs burger. Often I comtemplated whether I should just reject flight meal if I am not hungry. But I often end up taking it and eat a portion of it which is bad. In this case I finished the sambal fish but not the rice. In the later meal, I choose fried rice and managed to finish it. It's really hard not to grow fat at this rate.

A MacDonalds Sydney Sunday

I have never tried MacDonalds overseas iny memory. I have this overseas trip principle that I abide to that always to try local food instead of food that we can get in Singapore e.g. Fast food. But this time I decided to try Macs because a colleague said that Macs might taste different overseas.

We woke up early and heads towards the nearest Mac near the hostel. This Macs looks glamourous inside with chandlier lights. I shared a delux breakfast roll with my colleague. The roll is made up of bacon, eggs and beef patties. I think it tasted average and still prefer McMuffin instead.

When we reached the airport around 3pm, we walked past Macs and wanted to try Angus Beef Burger. I ordered Mighty Angus Meal that costs AUD $8+. This is as expensive as Carl's Junior. Honestly I cannot really tell a difference between Angus beef and normal beef patty. It tasted like quarter pounder except for the sourdough bread. But what I could taste a difference is the fries. My colleague said he could taste the difference too. There is a farmer taste or a stronger roasted taste which makes the fries nicer than Singapore.

Takeru Japanese Cuisine

We passed by this restaurant upteem times whenever we go Chinatown. I notice the crowd are mostly Asians and younger too. The price is considerably reasonable (<AUD$20). Actually, we are with luggage and is our way to hostel for check-in but decided to pop in since it was dinner time. The interesting thing about this restaurant is there is half sized portion which is fantastic for people like me. I guess they realise Asians have smaller appetite. I ordered a salmon cream sauce spagetti (AUD$6+) while my colleagues both ordered different types of Ramen.

The spagetti tastes delicious and my colleagues find it tasty too. Unfortunately, their ramen doesn't taste good. It paled against Singapore's Ajisen Ramen. The soup tasted bland and the noodles did not taste like Ramen that we ate in Singapore. We also tried Fried Green Tea Ice Cream Desert (AUD$4+) too. The ice cream has very strong milk taste and I notice this in the other desert place that I blog earlier too. I have tried better fried ice cream somewhere in Singapore before.

The Red Door at Leura

After seeing the foggy famous three sisters at Blue Mountain and did a short muddy trek at Leura cascades, we headed to Leura for lunch. It is a small town with a stretch of shops along the main road. We spotted this cafe with reasonable price and headed in. It's called The Red Door and as you can see in the photo, the entrance is a red door. The interior is cozy and I simply love small cozy cafe. Around us are mostly tourists and mostly Asians. My colleagues ordered Beef Pie (AUD$15+) and Pasta (AUD$15+) while I took a long time to decide on Chicken Pie (AUD$13+). Pie seems to be popular in Sydney. I love the hot chocolate drink that I ordered. The hot chocolate came with 2 mash mallows which I find it interesting to dip them in hot chocolate to eat it. My chicken pie crust is not the crispy type and felt more like croissant but the chicken paste inside tastes not bad - more of watery mash. We all however love the Beef Pie that the other colleague ordered especially the black sauce that comes with it that makes it delicious.

The Soup Shop with Betty Boop

Saturday was our R&R day. The three of us extended our trip one more day so that we could travel to beyond Sydney Central. Despite the bad weather forecast of rain, we braved ourselves and headed to Blue Mountains. When we reached the train station, the Blue Mountain track is under maintainence and an alternative route is set up, that is to head to Black Town then take a bus to Blue Mountain all covered in a single return ticket that cost AUD$10.80. As I have been to Blue Mountains and know that the place is huge, I suggested all of us to buy the explorer bus pass (AUD$36) that will bring us around the place too.

After nearly 2.5 hours, we finally reached Katoomba. When we stepped out of the bus, all of us was freaking cold that we made mad rush to any nearby shops that are opened. Because it was so cold, we all bought thermal wear in one of the shop on the spot. Strangely, after putting on thermal wear, it really helped to warm up immediately.

None of us took breakfast because we got to wake up as early as 6.30am. So we headed into "The Soup Shop" that sells soups. There is a huge Betty Boop besides our table and not sure why they put such figurine in the shop. I order Potato & Bacon soup (AUD$10) thinking potatoes will help to fill the stomach. The soup tastes normal and bacon isn't crispy. But for such cold and dreadful weather, I am satisfied to be drinking something hot.

Löwenbräu Keller

There is some light festival going on at Sydney Opera House and Circular Quay so we decided to head to that area for dinner by foot. It takes around 20 to 30 mins to reach Circular Quay. I suggested going to the The Rocks area which is next to Circular Quay because there are quite a few restaurants. If you hang out with 3 guys, their obvious choice is a restaurant with meat. I brought them to the German restaurant that I walked past and lingered around in my last trip.

This German restaurant is often full and buzzing with activities. Waitresses and waitors are wearing Germany traditional clothes. Colleagues are drooling at the pork knuckles at the next table. I order a pork schnitzel ( fried pork cutlet) instead. I love the schnitzels that I ate in Germany. Each of us also ordered a beer and I prefer the dark beer. A colleague ordered lemon beer and oddly there is no lemon taste. The schnitzel I ate was such a huge piece and by the time I finished it, I couldn't ate the fries that come along with it. I still prefer the ones I ate in Germany which is thicker. Likewise, my colleagues who ordered the pork knuckle couldn't finish. The pork knuckle tastes good. The food here reminded me of BrotZeit or Brewerks or Paulaner in Singapore. I could tell the guys looks blissful. Luckily there is a distance between hotel and here which we can walk so that we can digest the food.
